How safe is your water, really?

Waterborne risk hides in the gaps: a low-use outlet, an overdue review, a temperature no one is logging. Answer eight quick questions about your water systems and see your indicative risk band, what it means for the people who rely on you, and where to start. Under two minutes, and nothing is shared until you choose to.

1Who relies on the water in your buildings?Vulnerability raises both the stakes and the duty of care.
2How would you describe your water system?Stored, heated and far-travelled water gives bacteria more places to grow.
3Are there cooling towers or evaporative condensers on site?These are a notifiable, higher-risk source if present.
4Are hot and cold water reliably held outside the range bacteria thrive in (roughly 20 to 45C)?Hot kept hot, cold kept cold, and the temperatures logged.
5Do you have low-use outlets, dead legs or areas that sit idle?Seasonal wings, spare rooms and little-used taps are where stagnation starts.
6When was the system last cleaned, descaled or disinfected?
7Do you have a current written water risk assessment and a named Responsible Person?A live assessment, reviewed when things change, with someone clearly accountable.
8In the last two years, have you had positive samples, visible biofilm or fouling, or a water-quality scare?

How this is worked out

Each answer carries a risk weight based on the conditions that drive waterborne pathogen and biofilm growth: who relies on the water, how much is stored and heated, whether temperatures are controlled, whether outlets sit idle, how recently the system was cleaned, and whether control is written down and owned. We add those weights into an indicative band. It is a guide to where your exposure sits, not a measurement of it.

This is an indicative self-check, not a statutory Legionella risk assessment, and it does not replace a competent on-site assessment of your systems. It reflects the risk factors set out in the HSE Approved Code of Practice L8 and HSG274. Your actual exposure, and what would reduce it, is confirmed per site.
